QUESTIONS FOR NANCY HOUGLAND

TCB: Born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, how old were you when you started tennis and who introduced you? How did this come about?
NH: I was 12 years old when I started playing tennis. My mom made me go to the Park District in the summer for lessons to give me something to do. Within a week I was hooked and she couldn't get me away from the courts.

TCB: Before playing for South Dakota State University, did you play in High School?
NH: I played #1 singles and doubles for Lincoln High School.

TCB: How did your tennis career progress between college and Genesis?
NH: After college I kept competing because I loved the game so much. 1983 my husband Mike and I won the Equitable tennis tournament in the Husband / Wife division which gave us the opportunity to play at the US Open Husband wife division. I helped several high school coaches teach their players how to play doubles. I then was a Head Pro at Elcona Country Club in Elkhart IN. I worked with juniors of all levels and adults.

We then moved to Chicago and I started working for Midtown in Lisle, IL.
1997 We moved to Kansas City and I continued to work for Midtown in Overland Park. I developed a great league and adult program along with teaching ladies of all levels along with coaching USTA and Tencap teams. Genesis bought the Midtown location in March of 2016 and I continued on as Director of Adults.

TCB: When did you become PTR-certified?
NH: I was certified around 1995 in Chicago.

TCB: What do you like best about working at Genesis Health Clubs in Overland Park?
NH: The best thing about working at Overland Park are the members. I have loved to be a part of watching them improve their tennis game and meet new friends. I do enjoy creating new programs and leagues for the everyone to enjoy.

TCB: What are the challenges in your job?
NH: I enjoy the challenge of keeping tennis fun for our members. Our club has so many different programs going that it can be challenging to keep everything running smoothly. There is no relaxing at Genesis, Overland Park.

TCB: Besides USTA Leagues, are there other Leagues you are including in your programming?
NH: Kansas City has an inner city league called Tencap. We have had 27 teams this summer and have 14 for our fall and winter session.
We also have in-house leagues with several different formats. Our in-house leagues are a big draw to keep our members and get new members.

TCB: Is there pickleball on your list, too?
NH: We do not have pickleball. I have ran several special event for pickleball and they were very popular. Our courts are too busy to have pickleball.

TCB: Do you still play tennis yourself? How about pickleball?
NH: I still compete at tennis and pickleball and do not find it difficult to switch back and forth. They both have been a great avenue to meet amazing friends.
I am rated 5.0 in Pickleball - mixed and ladies doubles. That has been my new challenge the past couple of years.

TCB: What is your racquet (paddle) of choice?
NH: I play with the Head Gravity MP Lite. I used Head tennis racquets most of my tennis career. I use Paddletek pickleball paddles.

Congratulations to Nancy Hougland for being our
October 2019 Female Tennis Professional of the Month.
