College Park Tennis
Club is the home of Junior Tennis Champions Center (JTCC), whose
CEO Ray Benton is an active supporter,
volunteer, and friend of our sport for many decades. JTCC will
be our September 2019 Tennis Organization of the Month and we'll
introduce and interview Ray Benton for that issue in detail next
month. For our current issue, we interviewed John Borden, General Manager of CPTC and JTCC. |
From the club website

Questions for John
Borden
TCB: John, when
did you start being interested in tennis and who got you into
it?
JB: I first picked up a racquet at 9, but did not seriously start
playing until I was 10. I was introduced to tennis by my cousin
Tonya Evans and her mother, my Aunt Susan. Tonya was a top junior
and eventually a touring professional, but more importantly she
was my favorite cousin and I wanted to do what she was doing. |
TCB: What made you
work for JTCC? What did you do before?
JB: I came to JTCC shortly after finishing law school in search
of teaching hours to tide me over while I landed a job practicing
law. However, I fell in love with JTCC's mission of introducing
new players to tennis, admired the training environment and found
a great mentor and friend in Ajay Pant. Prior to coming to JTCC,
I was a law student and worked in the General Counsel's Office
of the United States Trade Representative. |
|
TCB: What is
the history of College Park Tennis Club?
JB: The College Park Tennis Club (CPTC), originally know as the
Tennis Center at College Park was founded in 1999 contemporaneously
with the JTCC.
Until it merged
with the JTCC in 2017, it was a for-profit tennis club for adults
and children. Its offerings included all 10 and under and Adult
Tennis, fitness and yoga classes.
TCB: Was the
club built with 32 courts from the get-go?
JB: No, originally we were a 27 court facility.
TCB: Does the
facility have memberships? If yes, how many?
JB: Yes, 298.
TCB: Does the
club feature league teams?
JB: We currently have 3 internal leagues and are currently working
on fielding a USTA team.
TCB: Are you
an active Net Generation site?
JB: Yes!
TCB: How many
tennis professionals work at JTCC
JB: 21 |
TCB: Do you offer
pickleball? What's your take on the sport?
JB: We do not offer pickleball, but think it is an engaging and
accessible racquet sport.
TCB: What are
your challenges at JTCC?
JB: Similar to many clubs, constantly adding new people to our
sport.
TCB: Do you still
play tennis yourself, like tournaments, leagues?
JB: I do not compete, but take every chance I get to get on the
court.
TCB: What's your
racquet of choice?
JB: Right now, Tecnifibre T-Fight 315
TCB: Thank you,
John Borden. |
