Othmane Garma works at one of
the most beautiful tennis clubs in the world, the Malibu Racquet Club.
Owned by famous Oracle founder
and avid tennis supporter Larry Ellison and managed by former
touring pro Trey Waltke, the Malibu Racquet Club is located in
one of the most desirable beach cities of Southern California.
From the
MRC web site:
The
clubhouse and surrounding grounds mingle beautiful hardwoods,
sandstone and streamlined shapes creating a modern rustic home
away from home.
MRC features eight
fully-lighted outdoor championship tennis courts, locker rooms
and showers, a cardiovascular fitness facility and dry heat sauna |
Othmane Garma, 32, was born in
Casablanca, Morocco and, naturally, speaks 3 languages: French,
Moroccan (Arabic) and English. His dad played pro-soccer in France
and gave his two sons the choice of soccer or tennis. At 5 years
of age they got their own tennis racquets and played both soccer
and tennis for a bunch of years. Othmane preferred the individuality
of the sport of tennis and enjoyed running and chasing the ball.
At age 12 he was already excelling and played Junior Davis Cup
for Morocco.
At age 14 his family moved to
Northern Virginia, which was quite rough for Othmane at first,
with no friends and big language problems. But he had two goals
already: learn English and qualify for College. After playing
High School tennis he was accepted for a full ride at Howard
University, a D1 College in Washington, DC. After playing on
the team at #2 Singles and #1 Doubles under Head Coach Larry Strickland for 4 years he graduated
with a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Therapy. |
Othmane wanted to become a professional
player but had no funds to sustain playing on the tour. He just
played some futures and became friends with Treat Huey, a fine doubles player who has
much success on the tour, especially with partner Max Mirnyi.
He became Huey's hitting partner and worked / traveled with him
for a year and a half. Still today he works as Huey's part time
coach.
Between 2011 and 2013 Othmane
worked as a High Performance Tennis Coach for notable junior
players at Four
Star Tennis Academy in Fairfax, Virginia. From 2012 until
2016 he was also Director of Tennis at Chesterbrook Swim &
Tennis in McLean, Virginia. During that time he was also Co-founder,
President and Coach at CourtPlay, a "digital platform for
the tennis community that connects players, coaches and courts." |
Since Othmane's girlfriend works
in Los Angeles he decided to move here and was introduced to
MRC General Manager Trey Waltke who subsequently offered him
a teaching position at the club. Within 3 weeks of his arrival
here he was approached by parents to coach their kids. He says,
"I need to work with kids who have a true desire to get
better. I want clients to be committed to the sport."
Today he works 40 hours a week
with a select group of just a few kids, all boys ages 9-13, and
a 14 year old female beginner. In the morning he works with Nick
Reyes, a 22 year old hopeful who just got on the tour. Nick contacted
him after graduating from Penn State. Othmane also works with
a few other touring pro's whenever they are in town.
"My dream is to coach a
top singles player, male or female," says Othmane.
Othmane Garma's
preferred racquet is a HEAD Graphene XT Radical. His string of
choice is Solinco and he strings his racquets in the mid-40ies
to mid-50ies (lbs) - approx. between 21 and 25 kg. |
