BILLY FREER
DIRECTOR OF TENNIS
Billy was born in Springs, South Africa, east of Johannisburg, and became the top junior tennis player in the nation in 1968, playing most of his matches at Ellis Park. He played the major professional tour from 1969 through 1975 and competed in the world’s major events including Wimbledon and the French Open. In 1974, he attained the no. 2 ranking in the nation in South Africa behind the legendary Cliff Drysdale.

Later that year, he immigrated to the United States and joined Drysdale at the Lakeway World of Tennis in Austin Texas, where he became the director in 1979. Lakeway Tennis was at the time the headquarters of Lamar Hunt's World Championship of Tennis (WCT), the organization that preceded the ATP Tour until 1990

Billy worked at Lakeway for 14 years and went back to South Africa in 1988 to work as head of construction for a large golf resort called Fancourt in Blanco George, about 280 miles east of Cape Town. After completion he became the Resort's General Manager and ended up as their CEO before moving to the United States in 1993, where was hired at Brookhaven.

Billy Freer's almost 24 years at Brookhaven Country Club and his managing the tennis facility, its programs and the Pro Shop resulted in numerous awards, such as

  • "No. 1 Tennis Organization in America" by the USTA
  • "Top Private Facility of the Year" by RSI Magazine
  • "Best Country Club Tennis program in the United States" by Tennis Industry magazine
  • "Top 10 Pro Shop in America" by Tennis Industry Association

Billy's role within the ClubCorp organization is significant. Not only does he manage the tennis facility at Brookhaven, the first and largest member of the ClubCorp family, but he is also the organization's National Tennis Advisor and Regional Tennis Director of ClubCorp's North Texas Region (15 clubs).

Billy Freer says, "We have a wonderful, active membership at Brookhaven, one of the nicest I have ever come across. Brookhaven is known as The Player's Club. People who want to play serious tennis come to Brookhaven. At the same time our membership is very diverse since we are not an expensive club. We have everyone from blue collar to wealthy. And from age 4 to 85."
