www.brokensoundclub.org/tennisWhen a tennis professional holds the position of Tennis Director at a large club for 24 years you can bet it is either a truly exceptional facility or he is an outstanding leader. Or both? In the case of USPTA professional Greg Wheaton you can bet it's both! Upbringing West Virginia boy Greg Wheaton played all sorts of sports growing up. Baseball, football, basketball, which is typically the sign of good hand - eye coordination and athleticism. Many of those versatile athletes gravitate to tennis, few of them make it to Tennis Director at a highly visible and prestigous club such as Broken Sound. Greg started taking lessons and playing tennis in the park at age 8. Played junior tournaments, High School tennis and Division I College at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Georgia. After College Greg played club tennis in Germany for a while, called Blau-Weiss Düsseldorf his home in 1980/81.Upon his return to the US he started working as a tennis pro in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and played local tournaments there. Afterwards he worked at clubs in Birmingham, Alabama, before finally moving to well known hotbed of tennis Boca Raton Florida in 1986. For five years he worked at Boca West and in 1991 the Broken Sound Club hired Greg Wheaton as Director of Tennis. Broken Sound Club With 23 Har-tru courts, the Broken Sound Club is a world class facility. The United States Tennis Association awarded Broken Sound Club the Outstanding Facility of the Year award in 2014. The club is located in a residential community with 1,600 homes. Greg has 3 tennis professionals permanently working for him, in addition to a number of seasonal staff for junior development and other programs. Greg, who still plays tournaments in Florida, says, "It is great to work for Broken Sound. The layout of the club is very member friendly, we have a beautiful stadium court, patio, cafe, spa/fitness center and pro-shop. We offer a variety of nice and exciting events for our members, such as leagues, charity events, and exhibition play. We had Kevin Anderson play at the club and Mats Wilander.
