SINGLES - Tsurenko Beats Mladenovic
To Capture Acapulco
Lesia
Tsurenko captured her third WTA title at the Abierto Mexicano
Telcel after a commanding victory over Kristina Mladenovic.
27-year-old Lesia Tsurenko captured her third WTA title at the
Abierto Mexicano Telcel after a commanding victory over Kristina
Mladenovic, 6-1, 7-5.
"I'm really happy to start the season like this: I had the
semifinal in Hobart International and now this title here in
Acapulco," Tsurenko said after the match.
"It's three
of three now, it's a 100% result for me and this makes me very
happy," she added, referencing her perfect success rate
in WTA finals. "I'm very happy with this result, and to
win the title here it's just amazing."

Dons Sombrero For Fiesta In Acapulco
Lesia
Tsurenko discusses the improvements leading her second title
in six months at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel.
Lesia Tsurenko came to the Abierto Mexicano Telcel on a mission
after a tough loss at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.
The No.7 seed ended up rolling to her third career title in Acapulco,
dismissing February favorite Kristina Mladenovic in straight
sets to return to the Top 50 ahead of the BNP Paribas Open, one
of her favorite tournaments.
WTA Insider caught
up with the Ukrainian after her on-court fiesta to discuss the
key to her confidence, her work with a new fitness coach, and
how she hopes to hold onto that sombrero given to her during
the trophy ceremony.

SINGLES - Barty Parties Kuala Lumpur
Qualifier
Ashleigh Barty's party rolled on as she beat Nao Hibino, 6-3, 6-2,
to win the ALYA Malaysian Open - her first singles title.
"Nao and I have played a lot of times, and I always love
playing her, we have a good time," said the Australian in
her on-court interview.
That familiarity told as Barty put pressure on her opponent's
serve from the off, demonstrating the confidence built from dropping
only a single set over the course of the week.
SINGLES - Happy Barty Hails Hard
Work In Malaysia
The loquacious
Ashleigh Barty was uncharacteristically short of words after
winning her first singles title at the ALYA Malaysian Open.
After dropping only one set as she came through qualifying to
win the final in Kuala Lumpur, the Australian has had a bright
start to 2017 - all the more remarkable considering that she
took a year out to play cricket in the Women's Big Bash League
for Brisbane Heat.
"I think it's been a success for us, the start [of 2017],
more successful than we thought," she said after the match.
"It's a tribute to all the work we did in the offseason,
and last year, coming back. It hasn't quite been 12 months since
I started playing singles again. I'm certainly happy to be back."
DOUBLES - Twice As Nice For Barty,
Wins Doubles Title With Dellacquaia
It was
twice as nice for Ashleigh Barty in Kuala Lumpur as she won the
doubles title with Casey Dellacqua - adding that to the singles crown she
had secured earlier in the day.
The Australian pair beat Nicole Melichar and Makoto Ninomiya
7-6(5), 6-3, coming back from 5-1 down in the first-set tiebreak
to lift the trophy in straight sets.
"I feel great - very tired but great," said Barty afterwards.
"It's been a monster week for me. I don't think I could
have physically have played any more matches. I'm very happy
to come away with two titles today, but even if we didn't it
would have been a fantastic tournament anyway. Now it's just
an absolute bonus."

SINGLES - Murray Streaks To First
Dubai Title
World
No. 1 claims 45th tour-level crown
Andy
Murray wasted no time in securing his 45th tour-level crown on
Saturday, dominating the final of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis
Championships over Fernando Verdasco.
Murray extended his ruthless run in ATP World Tour 500 events
with a 6-3, 6-2 victory in just one hour and 13 minutes. The
World No. 1, who claimed his first title of the season, has now
lifted trophies in four straight 500-level events entered, posting
a 19-0 record.
The Scot improved to an impressive 13-1 in his FedEx ATP Head2Head
series against Verdasco, having won eight straight encounters
since a fourth-round defeat at the Australian Open in 2009. Murray
takes home $523,330 in prize money and 500 Emirates ATP Rankings
points.
"It's nice to win and I played much better as the match
went on," said Murray. "I started a little bit slow,
but I was solid. I wasn't afraid to attack his forehand side.
He's got one of the best forehands, but I tried to move him around
the court as much as I could.
DOUBLES - Rojer/Tecau Return To Winners'
Circle With Dubai Crown
Duo wins
first title of the season
Former ATP
Finals champions Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau ended their
title drought on Saturday at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.
The Dutch-Romanian duo rallied past Marcin Matkowski and Rohan
Bopanna 4-6, 6-3, 10-3 in one hour and 20 minutes to lift the
trophy, firing six aces and saving three of four break points.
Rojer and Tecau claimed their first ATP World Tour title since
the 2016 Mutua Madrid Open, clinching a 13th crown in total as
a team. Two years removed from their triumph at The O2 in London,
the tandem are looking to hit their stride once again. They have
won titles at five different ATP World Tour 500 events, also
including Washington, Beijing and Valencia in 2014 and Rotterdam
in 2015. Rojer and Tecau take home $157,570 in prize money and
500 Emirates ATP Doubles Rankings points.

SINGLES - Querrey Stuns Nadal For
Acapulco Title
American
scores first victory over two-time champion.
In a field featuring five of the world's Top 10 players, Sam
Querrey is the last man standing at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel.
The American completed his dream week in Acapulco with a stunning
6-3, 7-6(3) upset over second seed Rafael Nadal in Saturday's
final.
"It's definitely a tournament that I'm going to remember
for the rest of my life," said Querrey. "It's just
one of those weeks where I got in the zone and everything was
working for me. I hope I can have more like this."
Querrey is the
first American champion in the tournament's 24-year history.
He scored his first win over the Spaniard, improving his FedEx
Head2Head record against Nadal to 1-4. The victory also breaks
Nadal's undefeated streak in Acapulco. The 2005 and 2013 champion
entered the final with a 14-0 record and had not lost a set in
any of his previous matches.
The World No. 40 in the Emirates ATP Rankings picked up his ninth
ATP World Tour singles title and second at the 500-level, having
won the Memphis Open in 2010.
Querrey advanced
through a difficult draw in Acapulco that included wins over
fifth seed David Goffin in the second-round, fourth seed Dominic
Thiem in the quarter-finals and sixth seed Nick Kyrgios in the
semi-finals. Querrey is projected to jump to No. 26 on Monday,
his highest standing since August 2013.
DOUBLES - Top Seeds Win First Tournament
Since US Open
Top seeds
Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares picked up their first ATP World
Tour doubles title of 2017 on Saturday at Abierto Mexicano Telcel, racing
to a 6-3, 6-3 victory over John Isner and Feliciano Lopez in
Acapulco.
Murray/Soares maintained control from the beginning, not facing
a break point in the opening set and capturing the lone break
to grab the early advantage. The second set was nearly identical,
with the top seeds breaking Isner/Lopez at 4-3 and comfortably
serving out the match to prevail in 62 minutes

SINGLES - Cuevas Underhands His Way
To Sao Paulo Title, History
Third
seed wins back-to-back-to-back Brasil Open titles.
Pablo
Cuevas picked the most unorthodox way to win an unconventional
final on Monday at the Brasil Open in Sao Paulo. About to deliver
a second serve on his fourth match point, the Uruguayan dipped
down and tapped an underhand serve to Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas,
who rushed to the service box and successfully returned the surprise
tactic.
But Cuevas eventually
won the point and made tournament history in Sao Paulo with his
6-7(3), 6-4, 6-4 win. The 31 year old became the first player
since the tournament began in 2001 to win three consecutive Brasil
Open titles. Spaniard Nicolas Almagro has won the tournament
three times but only two of his titles were successive.
Cuevas celebrates
his sixth career ATP World Tour title with his third consecutive
Sao Paulo crown. All of the right-hander's titles have come on
clay and since 2014.
DOUBLES - Brazilian Duo Triumph On
Home Soil
Dutra
Silva and Sa notch first team title.
For the first time in six years, an all-Brazilian team has claimed
the doubles title at the Brasil Open. Rogerio Dutra Silva and
Andre Sa lifted the trophy on home soil in Sao Paulo, defeating
Marcus Daniell and Marcelo Demoliner 7-6(5), 5-7, 10-7.
"Every title
is special, but to do it on home soil is another level,"
said Sa. "It was a great atmosphere this week. I had my
friends and family here, so it was really special. Rogerio is
from Sao Paulo, so it was very special for him as well. We're
just really happy."
Teaming for the first time this week, Dutra Silva and Sa became
the first all-Brazilian tandem to prevail at the tournament since
Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares in 2011. Previously, Sa had triumphed
alongside Melo for the 2008 crown, when the event was held in
nearby Costa do Sauipe.

Tournament abbreviations
WC = wildcard
(given by the tournament to a player that could not get in on
their ranking, or did not enter in time.
PR = protected ranking. This is used when a player
has been out for a certain period of time due to injury (I think
it's at least 6 months) and their ranking slips down to where
they wouldn't get in on their current ranking.
Q = Qualifier.
A = Alternate. Used in qualifying when a player
withdraws before their first match. Also used in main draw if
there was no qualifying draw and the draw was full before the
player withdrew.
LL = Lucky loser. A player that loses in qualifying
(usually the final round unless none of the final round losers
sign the lucky loser list) and gets into main draw when a main
draw player withdraws before their first match.
SE = Special exempt. A player who signed into qualifying
of a tournament, but was still playing in the previous week's
tournament at the time the qualifying draw was done. This player
can get a special exempt into the main draw the following week. |
