SINGLES - Babos Brings Home Budapest
Title, Survives Safarova in Final Thriller
Top seed
Timea Babos won her second career title in front of her home
crowd, roaring back from a set down to defeat No.2 seed Lucie
Safarova at the Hungarian Ladies Open.
Timea Babos won
her second WTA title in style, taking out former World No.5 Lucie
Safarova, 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-3 to win the inaugural Hungarian Ladies
Open championship in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.
"I'm really, really happy," she said after the match.
"It's an unbelievable feeling and an incredible moment for
my career that I could play against Lucie. She's an amazing player
and it was a big fight and it's unbelievable that I could come
out with a win in front of my home crowd."
Both women were
playing their first finals of the season - Babos came into the
tournament without winning a WTA main draw match - and it was
Safarova, a French Open finalist in 2015, who overcame a slow
start and an early break to eventually race out to a 5-1 lead
in the first set tie-break, dropping just three points behind
an entertaining opener.
"It was
very tiring. I had to move a lot, but still be aggressive. She's
a tough player - one of the best - so it was difficult, especially
after losing the first set after leading. I tried to stay calm
and maintain my tactics; it was working really well, and the
at 2-2 in the third, I felt like something changed. From that
moment, I was flying on the court, being really aggressive. I'm
especially happy with how I played in the third."
DOUBLES - Hsieh/Kalashnikova Win
Budapest Doubles Title
In the doubles
final, former World No.1 Hsieh Su-Wei paired Oksana Kalashnikova
to outlast comeback kid Galina Voskoboeva - who was playing her
first WTA final since sitting out two seasons due to foot injuries
- and Arina Rodionova, 6-3, 4-6, 10-4. |

SINGLES - Thiem Reigns in Rio
Austrian
claims eighth ATP World Tour title
Dominic Thiem
has found a home on the Latin American Golden Swing, surging
to the title at the Rio Open presented by Claro on Sunday. Thiem
fought past Pablo Carreno Busta 7-5, 6-4 in one hour and 34 minutes
to lift the trophy at the Jockey Club Brasileiro.
With Brazilian legend Gustavo Kuerten in attendance, the World
No. 8 claimed his eighth ATP World Tour crown, second at the
500 level and third on the Golden Swing, having previously triumphed
in Buenos Aires and Acapulco in 2016. He fired 25 winners, including
14 on his forehand wing and seven aces to prevail over Carreno
Busta. Thiem also converted four of eight break chances in extending
his FedEx ATP Head2Head edge to 5-1.
"I am feeling really great," said Thiem. "This
is the best feeling you can have, winning a title. It's all you
practise for. I played five very good matches, especially in
the semis and final against amazing players.
"I did same thing last year, going from clay to hard in
Acapulco and I did well. It's a slower hard court with a high
bounce, so it's what I like. It's not easy with the travel and
time difference, but the confidence is high and I'm feeling great."
DOUBLES - Cuevas/Carreno Busta Dethrone
Colombian Power in Rio
Spanish-Uruguayan
duo capture first team title
Pablo Carreno
Busta wishes every day on the ATP World Tour would be like Saturday
in Rio de Janeiro. Hours after completing a stunning comeback
to reach the singles final, the Spaniard clinched the Rio Open
presented by Claro doubles title with Pablo Cuevas.
Carreno Busta and Cuevas edged defending champions Juan Sebastian
Cabal and Robert Farah 6-4, 5-7, 10-8 in one hour and 29 minutes.
The Colombian Power looked to be on their way to a comeback of
their own after forcing a Match Tie-break from a set and a break
down. But the Spanish-Uruguayan duo would have the last laugh,
taking the title on their first championship point.
"I'm very happy," said Carreno Busta. "It's always
very special to win a title even if it's a doubles one. It's
very important. I'm sure it's going to help me tomorrow for my
singles final."

SINGLES - Tsonga Dominates in Marseille
for Back-to-Back Titles
Frenchman
should return to Top 10 on Monday
Who can stop
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga?
The Frenchman won his ninth match in a row and celebrated his
third Open 13 Marseille title on Sunday with a 6-4, 6-4 win against
countryman Lucas Pouille. The 31-year-old Tsonga outplayed his
younger compatriot, breaking the 23 year old twice to cruise
in 69 minutes.
The title gives
Tsonga 14 for his career and his second for 2017. He won the
ABN Amro World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam a week ago by defeating
then-World No. 11 David Goffin. The win also caps one of Tsonga's
best months in recent memory. Before Rotterdam, he reached the
Open Sud de France semi-finals before falling to #NextGenATP
star Alexander Zverev, who eventually won the ATP World Tour
250 title.
DOUBLES - Like Old Times For French
Pairing in Marseille
Benneteau/Mahut
hadn't played together in five years
It's as if they
do this together every week. Frenchmen Julien Benneteau and Nicolas
Mahut, playing together for the first time since 2012, won the
Open 13 Marseille doubles title on Sunday. The top seeds prevailed
6-4, 6-7(9), 10-5 against Dutchman Robin Haase and Brit Dominic
Inglot, who were going for their first team doubles crown.
Benneteau/Mahut
won nearly 80 per cent of their first-serve points and saved
four of six break points faced. Years ago, the two were a consistent
pairing on the ATP World Tour. They won two titles together -
2003 Metz and 2009 Lyon - both of which were played indoors,
like the Open 13 Marseille. Benneteau/Mahut also reached a pair
of US Open semi-finals.

SINGLES - SSock
Takes Delray Beach Title As Raonic Withdraws
American
receives walkover in Sunday's final
Third seed
Jack Sock continues his strong start to 2017 by taking another
title on Sunday at the Delray Beach Open.
The American won his third ATP World Tour singles title when
top seed Milos Raonic withdrew before taking the court for their
final due to a hamstring tear in his right leg. The unfortunate
end to the tournament gives Sock his second ATP World Tour crown
of 2017, having prevailed last month at the ASB Classic (d. Sousa).
Sock didn't drop a set in claiming victory this week. He improves
to 11-1 this season and is projected to move to a career-high
No. 18 in the Emirates ATP Rankings on Monday.
DOUBLES - Klaasen / Ram Prevail in
Delray Beach
Second seeds
fight through difficult draw to take the title
Second seeds
Raven Klaasen and Rajeev Ram picked up their first ATP World
Tour doubles title of 2017 on Sunday at the Delray Beach Open,
prevailing in a tight 7-5, 7-5 final over third seeds Treat Huey
and Max Mirnyi.
"It seems like I'm just the sideshow here in Delray Beach.
I just have to make sure I'm not the reason we're losing matches!"
joked Klaasen. "I think Rajeev and I have done some good
things to improve our games and this week was another progression
for us as a team. The crowd has been great all week. People really
enjoy their doubles here and that makes it fun for us."
The South African-American pair earned their fourth ATP World
Tour doubles title as a team, winning in 2015 and 2016 at the
Gerry Weber Open and last year at the Chengdu Open They improved
their FedEx ATP Head2Head against Huey/Mirnyi to 2-0, adding
to their win in the semi-finals of last year's Miami Open presented
by Itau. Both players have excelled before in Delray, with Ram
winning the 2011 doubles title with Scott Lipsky and Klaasen
finishing runner-up in 2015 with Leander Paes. Ram has also enjoyed
singles success here with a runner-up showing last year (l. Querrey).

Tournament abbreviations
WC = wildcard
(given by the tournament to a player that could not get in on
their ranking, or did not enter in time.
PR = protected ranking. This is used when a player
has been out for a certain period of time due to injury (I think
it's at least 6 months) and their ranking slips down to where
they wouldn't get in on their current ranking.
Q = Qualifier.
A = Alternate. Used in qualifying when a player
withdraws before their first match. Also used in main draw if
there was no qualifying draw and the draw was full before the
player withdrew.
LL = Lucky loser. A player that loses in qualifying
(usually the final round unless none of the final round losers
sign the lucky loser list) and gets into main draw when a main
draw player withdraws before their first match.
SE = Special exempt. A player who signed into qualifying
of a tournament, but was still playing in the previous week's
tournament at the time the qualifying draw was done. This player
can get a special exempt into the main draw the following week. |
