SINGLES - Pliskova Powers
Past Cornet In Brisbane, Returns To
Top 5
Karolina
Pliskova capped a perfect start to the season with a dominant
victory over Alizé Cornet in the final of the Brisbane
International on Saturday evening.
After little over an hour on court, Pliskova calmly swatted away
an overhead to complete a 6-0, 6-3 win and lift her seventh career
title.
DOUBLES - Mattek-Sands
& Mirza Win Brisbane, No.1 Ranking Changes Hands
If Bethanie
Mattek-Sands and Sania Mirza were thinking about the imminent
change at the summit of the doubles world, they hid it well during
a dominant victory at the Brisbane International on Saturday
evening.
Mattek-Sands and Mirza produced a near flawless display to overwhelm
Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina, 6-2, 6-3. The result ensures
that Mattek-Sands will replace her partner as the World No.1
when the new rankings are released on Monday.
Mattek-Sands On Her
Rise To The Top Of Women's Doubles In Brisbane
It's been
a long journey for Bethanie Mattek-Sands, who starts off her
2017 season at the summit of the WTA doubles rankings. The American
ended partner Sania Mirza's 91 straight weeks at No.1 by winning
the Brisbane International.

SINGLES - Siniakova
Outguns Riske To Lift Shenzhen Title
Katerina
Siniakova lifted her maiden career title with a straight-set
victory over Alison Riske in Saturday's Shenzhen Open final.
After a slow start, Siniakova, who had lost her two other WTA
final appearances, took control to run out a 6-3, 6-4 winner.
"It's been
a really great week for me and I'm so glad that I won this time
because this match was really tough; I didn't play my best but
I'm really happy that I did it," Siniakova said during the
trophy presentation.
"It's a
great start to the year for me. I hope my performance continues
to go up and get better."
Last year was
one of steady progress for Siniakova, closing in on a Top 50
debut following runner-up finishes in Bastad and Tokyo. She signaled
her intent to continue this rise with a series of impressive
showings this week, accounting for two Top 10 players, Simona
Halep and Johanna Konta en route to the final.
Siniakova Stuns Konta
In Shenzhen
Katerina
Siniakova is into her third career WTA final after stunning No.3
seed Johanna Konta, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 at the Shenzhen Open.
Siniakova reached her first two WTA finals last year at International
events in Bastad and Tokyo, but this run is undoubtedly the best
of her young career.
DOUBLES - Hlavackova
/ Shuai Win Shenzhen Doubles Crown
In the doubles
final, the home crowd was given reason to cheer as Andrea Hlavackova
and Peng Shuai defeated Raluca Olaru and Olga Savchuk, 6-1, 7-5. |

SINGLES - American Davis
Defeats Konjuh, Takes Home First WTA Title In Auckland
Lauren Davis
came out on top in a battle of rising stars at the ASB Classic,
where she defeated No.8 seed Ana Konjuh in straight sets to take
home her first WTA title.
The last time Davis and Konjuh met was right here in Auckland
back in 2014 with Davis coming out on top in three sets against
the Croatian wildcard. Three years later, Konjuh was unable to
get her revenge in the final, falling 6-3, 6-1.
DOUBLES - Bertens /
Larsson Take Auckland Doubles Title
Earlier in
the day, Kiki Bertens and Johanna Larsson added another doubles
trophy to their resume after their 6-2, 6-2 victory over Demi
Schuurs and Renata Voracova.
"It was a great week for us. Of course, I'm a little bit
disappointed to lose in the first round of singles but I'm really
happy that we could play some good doubles together and get a
couple more matches in," Bertens said after the victory.
The ASB Classic is Bertens and Larsson's third doubles title
in a row after they ended the year with back-to-back wins in
Linz and Luxembourg.
"We're planning to play the Australian Open together, and
in fact the whole year together, so it's great that we're playing
well together and having fun. I think that's the most important
thing. And hopefully some more titles together!"
Ostapenko Illness
Puts Davis Into Auckland Final
No.7 seed
Jelena Ostapenko won the opening set of the first ASB Classic
semifinal before symptoms of a viral illness proved too much,
forcing the Latvian youngster to retire as Davis led, 4-6, 6-4,
4-1.
"Today, I woke up in the morning with a fever, coughing
and everything. I felt much worse today than yesterday,"
she told press after the match. "I tried to play the match
but it was very difficult because I wasn't feeling good at all.

SINGLES - Dimitrov Snaps
Title Drought In Brisbane
Grigor Dimitrov's
late-season resurgence in 2016 continues unabated in early 2017.
The Bulgarian snapped a two-and-a-half year title drought Sunday
at the Brisbane International presented by Suncorp, defeating
third seed Kei Nishikori 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 in the final.
Dimitrov's title run included three consecutive Top 10 scalps:
Dominic Thiem in the quarter-finals, top seed Milos Raonic in
the semis and Nishikori in the final. Having lost his past four
ATP World Tour finals, he finally claimed his fifth career title,
his first since Queen's Club in 2014.
DOUBLES - Thompson,
Kokkinakis Claim First Doubles Title
Next Gen
ATP star Thanasi Kokkinakis made a dream return to the ATP World
Tour when he teamed with fellow Australian Jordan Thompson to
win the Brisbane International presented by Suncorp title Sunday.
The players, who ironically will play against each other in the
first round of next week's Apia International Sydney, both claimed
their first tour-level doubles title with a 7-6(7), 6-4 win over
first-time team Gilles Muller and Sam Querrey.

SINGLES - Djokovic Beats
Murray For Doha Title
Novak Djokovic
has taken the first battle of the 2017 ATP World Tour season
against Andy Murray, beating the Scot 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 to defend
his Qatar ExxonMobil Open title and exact revenge on the World
No. 1.
In an electrifying final, the Serbian captured his first title
since July (Rogers Cup) and showed some of the fiery tennis that
helped him dominate the first half of 2016. The 29 year old frequently
encouraged the crowd to back him, lifting his arms and pumping
his fist while staring into the stands.
DOUBLES - Frenchmen
Capture First ATP World Tour Title Of 2017
Jeremy Chardy
and Fabrice Martin have claimed the first ATP World Tour title
of 2017. The Frenchmen dismissed third seeds Vasek Pospisil and
Radek Stepanek 6-4, 7-6(3) in the Qatar ExxonMobil Open doubles
final on Friday to celebrate their first team doubles title.
Djokovic: Best Scenario
I Could Ask For To Start The Season
Revenge was
sweet for Novak Djokovic on Saturday at the Qatar ExxonMobil
Open. Just six weeks removed from relinquishing the year-end
No. 1 throne and ATP Finals title to Andy Murray, the Serbian
notched a 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 victory in the Doha final.
Djokovic successfully
defended his title in the Qatari capital, improving to an impressive
20-0 against his rival when winning the first set. After watching
Murray wrestle away the top spot in the Emirates ATP Rankings,
the World No. 2 was eager to make an early statement to open
2017.

SINGLES - Bautista Agut
Claims Chennai Title
Roberto Bautista
Agut added a fifth ATP World Tour title to his trophy cabinet,
beating 20-year-old Russian Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 6-4 in the Aircel
Chennai Open final on Sunday. The World No. 14 is now 5-6 in
finals, with Chennai added to his Sofia (2016), Auckland (2016),
Stuttgart (2014) and s-Hertogenbosch (2014) titles.
DOUBLES - Indian Duo
Capture Chennai Doubles Crown
Rohan Bopanna
and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan topped Indian countrymen Purav Raja
and Divij Sharan 6-3, 6-4 to win the Aircel Chennai Open doubles
title on Sunday. It was the first all-Indian final at the ATP
World Tour 250 tournament in 22 years.
#NextGen Medvedev
Reaches First ATP World Tour Final
Daniil Medvedev
advanced to his first ATP World Tour final in dramatic fashion
on Saturday, saving one match point to defeat Dudi Sela 4-6,
7-6(2), 6-2 at the Aircel Chennai Open. The Russian #NextGenATP
star will face Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut for the title.
The 20-year-old Medvedev, No. 99 in the Emirates ATP Rankings,
stormed back from an early deficit and would break Sela serving
for the match at 5-4 in the second set. The Israeli held match
point at 40/30, but Medvedev would reel off three straight points
to break back. He would eventually force a decider and it was
smooth sailing from there.

Tournament abbreviations
WC = wildcard
(given by the tournament to a player that could not get in on
their ranking, or did not enter in time.
PR = protected ranking. This is used when a player
has been out for a certain period of time due to injury (I think
it's at least 6 months) and their ranking slips down to where
they wouldn't get in on their current ranking.
Q = Qualifier.
A = Alternate. Used in qualifying when a player
withdraws before their first match. Also used in main draw if
there was no qualifying draw and the draw was full before the
player withdrew.
LL = Lucky loser. A player that loses in qualifying
(usually the final round unless none of the final round losers
sign the lucky loser list) and gets into main draw when a main
draw player withdraws before their first match.
SE = Special exempt. A player who signed into qualifying
of a tournament, but was still playing in the previous week's
tournament at the time the qualifying draw was done. This player
can get a special exempt into the main draw the following week. |
