Cibulkova Stuns Kerber To Win WTA Finals
Dominika
Cibulkova wrote the final chapter of a fairytale season by upsetting
World No.1 Angelique Kerber to win the BNP Paribas WTA Finals
Singapore presented by SC Global.
One week on from a painful opening night defeat to Kerber, Cibulkova
gained revenge in spectacular fashion, powering to a 6-3, 6-4
victory in an hour and 16 minutes.
"I have no words, coming here for the first time, the biggest
tournament of my life. I still don't know how I won, I put the
ball over the net and it went in; it's the happiest moment of
my life," Cibulkova said in her on-court interview.

DOUBLES - Makarova
& Vesnina Crowned Singapore Champions
Ekaterina
Makarova and Elena Vesnina produced a brilliant performance on
Sunday afternoon to defeat Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova
and lift the doubles title at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore
presented by SC Global.
A high-quality encounter was settled by a few moments of inspiration
as the Russian pair closed out a 7-6(5), 6-3 victory after an
hour and 38 minutes.
Delighted Vesnina
& Makarova Reflect On Finals Win
Elena Vesnina
and Ekaterina Makarova were in high spirits as they reflected
on their win over Lucie Safarova and Bethanie Mattek-Sands, which
made them the doubles champions at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals
Singapore presented by SC Global.
"We were coming here so motivated to have this trophy,"
Makarova admitted in their post-match press conference. "We
came so early, because two years ago we came quite late - we
had just two days for practice."

SINGLES - Murray Victory
Turns Battle For No. 1 Red Hot
Andy Murray
turned the battle for No. 1 blazing hot on Sunday with his 6-3,
7-6(6) Erste Bank Open 500title victory against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
in Vienna.
The Scot now trails World No. 1 Novak Djokovic by just 415 points
in the Emirates ATP Race To London heading into the final week
of the ATP World Tour regular season. With 1,000 points up for
grabs at the BNP Paribas Masters this week, Murray could surpass
the Serbian if he wins the Paris title and Djokovic does not
reach the final. But Djokovic controls his fate. If he reaches
the final, he'll remain No. 1.
Reaching No. 1 would be a historic achievement for Murray, who,
on Monday, will have spent 76 weeks altogether at the No. 2 spot
in the Emirates ATP Rankings. He first reached No. 2 more than
seven years ago, on 17 August 2009. The 29 year old is trying
to become the oldest first-time No. 1 since John Newcombe, at
30 years of age, on 3 June 1974.
Tsonga was appearing
in his first ATP World Tour final since September 2015, when
he won his 12thcareer crown in Metz (d. Simon). He falls to 12-11
for his career in ATP World Tour finals. He will receive 300
Emirates ATP Rankings points and 201,380 in prize money.
Tsonga also still has a chance to qualify for the Barclays ATP
World Tour Finals, to be held 13-20 Nov. at The O2 in London.
He's currently in 13th place, 720 points behind Marin Cilic,
who holds the eighth and final qualification spot.
DOUBLES - Kubot / Melo
Repeat In Vienna
Fourth seeds
Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo repeated as Erste Bank Open 500
champions on Sunday to win their second ATP World Tour team doubles
title. The Polish/Brazilian pairing outlasted London hopefuls
Oliver Marach and Fabrice Martin 4-6, 6-3, 13-11 in one hour
and 43 minutes in Vienna.
Kubot/Melo led the back-and-forth Match Tie-break 9-6 before
Marach/Martin saved three match points and another at 9-10. Marach/Martin
then held their own championship point at 11-10, but Kubot/Melo
rattled off three consecutive points to clinch the ATP World
Tour 500 crown on their fifth championship point. They will receive
500 Emirates ATP Rankings points and split 126,400.

SINGLES - Cilic Roars
To Basel Crown, Boosts London Bid
Marin Cilic
sent a strong message to fellow contenders in the Emirates ATP
Race To London, powering to the Swiss Indoors Basel title on
Sunday.
The fourth-seeded Croatian downed Kei Nishikori 6-1, 7-6(5),
riding his dominant serve and potent forehand to victory after
one hour and 37 minutes. Cilic notched his 16th tour-level title
and second of the year. Two months after capturing his maiden
ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown in Cincinnati (d. Murray),
he earned his first title at the 500 level.
Cilic strengthened his position among the final two players looking
to secure bids at the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals,
boosting his point total to 3,090 in the Emirates ATP Race To
London. Currently in the final qualification position, having
passed Tomas Berdych on Saturday, he will look to have a strong
week at the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris to book his spot at
The O2 in London for a second time.
"In the
second set, I was a little tight," said Nishikori. "I
had a couple set points and couldn't convert. He played good
tennis today. "It was a good week for me, playing another
final. I had some good wins. It will be important to have another
good week in Paris and again in London. That will be my last
goal of the year."
DOUBLES - Granollers
/ Sock Blast To Basel Title
Fourth seeds
Marcel Granollers and Jack Sock streaked to the Swiss Indoors
Basel title on Sunday, lifting the trophy in their first tournament
as a team.
"We knew well going into the week that if we played well,
we could be a dangerous team," said Sock. "We're both
crafty and like playing from the baseline, but are also comfortable
at the net. We served well and he returned very well. He usually
carries me on the return games. We just had fun out there and
kept it light and loose."
The Spanish-American duo prevailed 6-3, 6-4 over Robert Lindstedt
and Michael Venus in exactly one hour at the St. Jakobshalle,
saving three of four break points faced. They claimed an initial
break to love in the second game of the first set and another
to open the second set, eventually earning the win on their first
match point.

Tournament abbreviations
WC = wildcard
(given by the tournament to a player that could not get in on
their ranking, or did not enter in time.
PR = protected ranking. This is used when a player
has been out for a certain period of time due to injury (I think
it's at least 6 months) and their ranking slips down to where
they wouldn't get in on their current ranking.
Q = Qualifier.
A = Alternate. Used in qualifying when a player
withdraws before their first match. Also used in main draw if
there was no qualifying draw and the draw was full before the
player withdrew.
LL = Lucky loser. A player that loses in qualifying
(usually the final round unless none of the final round losers
sign the lucky loser list) and gets into main draw when a main
draw player withdraws before their first match.
SE = Special exempt. A player who signed into qualifying
of a tournament, but was still playing in the previous week's
tournament at the time the qualifying draw was done. This player
can get a special exempt into the main draw the following week. |
