Fourth Annual National Wounded Warriors Tennis Camp a Huge Success!

The 4th Annual National Wounded Warrior Tennis Camp concluded in San Diego May 24 and was another huge success. Over 50 wounded, ill, and injured veterans and service members ranging in age from 22 to 91 participated; they came from 23 states representing 15 of the USTA Sections.

Steve Kappes, President of the San Diego District Tennis Association, said, " The feedback we received was extremely positive, and many participants verbally shared very personal stories that reinforced the importance of this program for their physical and emotional rehabilitation and their community reintegration."

With much support from dozens of local and national organizations, businesses and private individuals – each vet plays for free. All expenses are covered, including airfare, lodging, meals and tennis racquets. Local news channel San Diego 6 writes under the headline Veterans discover emotional, physical healing from tennis, "With every swing, a painful memory is eased and the anxiety of the past passes. With every save, it’s a giant step forward in the fight of their lives" They are also quoting double amputee Bryan East explaining how his chair gives him confidence to move on the court. “[It] keeps you from tipping,” said East. “A lot of guys may be down in the dumps, this will get you living again.”

Steve Kappes adds, "Thank you all for your many forms of support. My fellow tennis volunteers and I are grateful to be able to use the sport we love to help improve the lives of our deserving military veterans and service members -- over 600 have benefited from this program since its inception in 2009.
